Frequently Asked Questions

What happens once I decide to have a portrait done?
I will find out the size you would like and give you an estimated completion date. Let me know if you would like to see progress pics, or only the final. Also let me know if you want a specific surface color or any extras like a 2nd subject or background. Once I have your photo(s) I will sketch out the proportions and begin adding color.  On completion of your portrait I will email you a photograph of the finished portrait with a link for payment. Check in anytime throughout the process for updates.

How good does my photo need to be?

Please send photos in as high resolution as possible as the detail is essential for me to create your portrait. The subject must be in sharp focus. I can only draw what I can see. My goal is a portrait that shows each animal's uniqueness including the direction of hair growth (whorls), facial expression, hair colors, etc. and will be a treasured tribute to their individuality. For that to happen those details have to be present in the photo I'm working from. Also think about the finished portraits you like best and choose a photo that will lead to that type of portrait. In profile or looking at you? Is the angle from above, below or straight on? Is it a playful or noble look?

Will it look like my photo?

Yes.  My specialty is in creating a portrait that shows each animal's uniqueness.  For that to happen those details have to be present in the photo I'm working from. Please see the examples of portraits next to the photographs my clients sent me to get an idea of how closely the portrait will resemble the photo.  Your photo may be cropped to better accommodate the head/neck style portrait.

How long will it take to produce my portrait?
Usually 3-4 weeks, but this can be longer in busier periods such as Christmas. Gift certificates are available.

Can you a put in a specific background?
Most of my portraits do not have backgrounds, if you would like one please let me know before I begin the portrait. Please note that there will be an additional cost for complicated backgrounds.

How do I take care of my portrait?
Your portrait will arrive mounted and in a transparent plastic sleeve.  Your portrait should not be removed from the plastic covering until it is ready for framing. Keep it sealed and stored in a dry, cool place. When framing there must always be at least a single mount between the portrait and the glass. The pencil must not be in contact with the glass. As with any acrylic or other painting, to prevent fading do not hang in direct sunlight.

What size is best?
The size of the portrait is entirely up to you. Keep in mind that an 8x10 will be matted to fit an 11x14 frame, an 11x14 portrait will be matted to fit a 16x20 frame. The larger the portrait the higher the level of detail I can include.

How and when do I pay for my portrait?
Once I have finished I will send a completed photo and a link for payment by PayPal or credit/debit card.

How durable is colored pencil?
I use high quality pencils and surfaces with excellent pigment colourfastness. With proper care it should last many lifetimes.
